Caperucita Roja‘Little Red Riding Hood’ in Spanish Here is an open space adaptation of Caperucita Roja, a Spanish variant of the fantasy known in the English-talking world Little Red Riding Hood. Language and jargon notes follow for the guide of Spanish understudies. -  ¿Adà ³nde vas, niã ±a bonita? The Elenchus in Platos Five Dialogues - Literature Essay Samples

The Socratic method of investigation, the elenchus, is explained by example in Plato’s Five Dialogues. In Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito, Plato’s character of Socrates employs the elenchus as a way to challenge interlocutors. If an Athenian claims to be knowledgeable about a subject, Socrates sets out to prove that this knowledge is unfounded. With the elenchus, Socrates analyzes the incongruities of widespread beliefs. By doing so, he achieves his goal of rendering his interlocutors incapable of making unyielding conclusions about their wisdom, which frustrates and embarrasses them. However, Socrates does not aim only to publicly shame the interlocutor, but more importantly to scrutinize unexamined beliefs and to prove that these beliefs are often platitudinous. What ultimately comes of the elenchus is not a revised definition of unexamined beliefs, but rather an understanding that humans are ignorant beings, and cannot provide concrete knowledge on every subject. Throu gh his depiction of Socrates, Plato bestows upon us an erudite ignorance. Once we understand that we lack knowledge, we no longer must live according to hollow, contradictory beliefs. Instead, we can start questioning beliefs for ourselves; we can live more meaningful, valuable, and happy lives. We first encounter an exposition of the elenchus when Socrates meets Euthyphro at the courthouse in the dialogue Euthyphro. While discussing his indictment with Socrates, Euthyphro claims to â€Å"have accurate knowledge† of the divine (5a). This is an example of an empty knowledge claim that Socrates will not let go unquestioned. In order to engage Euthyphro in the elenchus, Socrates asks him to explain â€Å"what is the pious, and what the impious† (5d). It is found within the following discussion, during which Socrates questions the contradictions within each of Euthyphro’s definitions, that part of the nature of the elenchus is to attempt to identify ambiguous concept s using â€Å"one form† (5d). Socrates wants Euthyphro to encompass the nature of piety into one form that can be applied to all situations to determine whether or not something is pious. The result is that Euthyphro becomes frustrated, as he says to Socrates, â€Å"whatever proposition we put forward goes around and around, and refuses to stay put where we establish it† (11b). This is an aim of the Socratic method of investigation; it brings the interlocutor to a realization that his or her knowledge claim is in fact flawed and unsound, so as to expose the interlocutor to aporia, or divine confusion. In Apology, Socrates stands before the court and defends his method of imparting his wisdom on Athenians by illuminating its origins and intentions. He first refers to â€Å"the god at Delphi as witness to the existence and nature of [his] wisdom,† who apparently said that no man was wiser than Socrates (21a). Socrates is thought to be wise because â€Å"he underst ands that his wisdom is worthless† (23b). This means that Socrates knows that humans are not capable of fully understanding the world; wisdom of morals, values, and the divine is beyond our reach. Since humans only have concrete knowledge of what is fleeting, human knowledge is not of great use. Socrates grasps this concept, and he attempts to pass it along to other Athenians by engaging them in the elenchus. Even though his intent is to help bring this realization to the citizens of Athens, Socrates’ method of questioning their beliefs ultimately turns the citizens against him. They are humiliated when Socrates uses the elenchus to make them look unintelligent in public and they are not willing to accept that their beliefs are so easily questioned. As a result, Socrates is brought to trial and sentenced to death.Crito attempts to persuade Socrates to escape this death sentence in the dialogue Crito. Here, Socrates uses the elenchus again, this time with a good friend. Socrates has already made up his mind about how a person should behave when sentenced by the state, and he is determined to adhere to these convictions, not letting vanity persuade him to change his mind because he finds himself in a compromised position. This is an application of the â€Å"form† idea that he first mentioned in Euthyphro. Socrates believes that all people, including him, should carry out their sentences, because all citizens are subject to the laws of the state to which they belong. Since Socrates believes that a tacit social agreement between citizen and state always exists, and that just agreements should be fulfilled, he must fulfill his sentence for the sake of his character and posterity. He uses the elenchus, again involving very complicated and multilayered rationalization, to prove to Crito that he must honor this principle, even when his own life is at stake. By synthesizing these examples, we can identify the mechanics of the elenchus. In an ideal i nvestigation, Socrates begins by having the interlocutor assert his â€Å"knowledge† on some sort of moral conundrum. Then, using reason and a series of irrefutable questions, Socrates has the interlocutor assert a contradictory statement. When both statements are juxtaposed, the inconsistencies of the belief are uncovered, causing the interlocutor to be led to aporia. It is traditionally problematic to be confused, but to reach aporia or to possess Socratic wisdom is a different kind of confusion; it can be of great benefit to the soul. In Apology, Socrates is said to have thought that â€Å"it is the greatest good for a man to discuss virtue every day†¦ for the unexamined life is not worth living for men† (38a). To examine life is to be completely truthful with yourself and to fortify your integrity, which provides you with a better, more fulfilling life. By questioning supposedly intractable beliefs using the elenchus, Socrates enlightens people, and does them a great service; he teaches people that, because they are ignorant, they should question and examine their beliefs more often so that they do not continue to believe fallacies. Even though it does not always provide a distinctive definition to concepts, the elenchus at least proves that the conventional definitions of these concepts are erroneously crafted and should no longer be considered truths. Furthermore, learning the depths of your own ignorance by spending time examining your beliefs is not only important because it exposes the fallacies behind them, but it also gives you insight as to why you actually believe them. For example, why do so many people believe that some higher being decides which action is right and which is wrong? Instead, could actions be inherently right or wrong, independent of a higher being? If yes, then why do we hold this being’s opinion on the matter in such high regard? It is examination questions like these that lead people to have a truer un derstanding of their beliefs, and a truer understanding of themselves. Seeking this identity will lead to happiness and success, and therefore, the Socratic method is not a waste of time, but an invaluable, fruitful use of it.In order to reap the benefits of examining life, a person must allow him- or herself to be vulnerable to embarrassment and confusion. If a person is willing to appear unwise at first to later understand and appreciate the good life, then he or she should apply the Socratic method to his or her beliefs whenever possible. In doing so, even if it takes time and stirs up confusion, the person will take a step towards becoming happy and fulfilled, which is worth the challenge in all respects. In his Five Dialogues, Plato helps us understand how Socrates used his method of investigation by providing examples of the elenchus in application. From them, we can extract that the elenchus confronts interlocutors’ knowledge claims to prove that they are inconsistent and fallacious. The nature of the elenchus in name is that it seeks to redefine ambiguous, abstract concepts in terms of a form that can be applied to any situation. However, in practice, the elenchus does not aim to actually offer an intractable definition. Instead, it offers a new perspective on what we thought was certain. The fact that the interlocutors’ beliefs are proven incongruent and that they are publicly embarrassed makes them react with hostility toward Socrates. However, they should instead be grateful that the elenchus delivers them to the valuable realization that they cannot possess wisdom regarding vague, intangible, conceptual things. Using the Socratic method to examine life is worth the time and effort, because it helps us appreciate our ignorance. Once we have examined our beliefs, we can then approach the world in a new way, which ultimately leads to a better understanding of ourselves and a more meaningful life.

The Sentencing Policy And The Criminal Justice System

There are many current criminal justice policies and laws that demonstrate how the policy has been informed by the theories that have been covered this semester. Many connections are not explicit but offer great detail in offering information based on the given topics. The current criminal justice policy that I’ve chosen was the sentencing policy. The sentencing policy was put together to reach every type of case that could possibly be seen in the criminal justice system. Here we will further discuss the sentencing policy, a case that I found to be a great example to understand the sentencing policy and how it can be overused, then we will move into how this policy have been informed by the rational choice theory, next we will cover its underlying assumptions and some of the ways it deviate, lastly we will discuss our alternative course of action which is the deterrence theory. In 1984 there was a Sentencing Reform Act and it was developed to enhance the ability of the criminal justice system to handle and effective and fair sentencing system (United States Sentencing Commission, 2015). To successfully reach the goal and purpose of the sentencing policy there must first be honesty in the verdicts of all sentencing (United States Sentencing Commission, 2015). Secondly, there must be reasonable uniformity when sentencing similar offenders who committed the same sort of crime (United States Sentencing Commission, 2015). Third, there must be proportionality when sentencing withShow MoreRelatedThe Law Of A Uniform Sentencing Guidelines1126 Words   |  5 Pagesoffenders. Financial Analysis of Halliburton Essay - 1517 Words

In 2010, Halliburton produced revenue of $17,973 billion and operating income of $3,009 billion, reflecting an operating margin of approximately 17%. Revenue increased by $3,298 billion, or 22% from 2009, while operating income increased $1,015 billion, or 51% from 2009. According to Halliburton’s 2010 Annual Report, â€Å"these increases were due to its customers’ higher capital spending throughout 2010, led by increased drilling activity and pricing improvements in North America† (Hal 2010 annual report). Therefore, for the purpose of analyzing Halliburton’s financial position as well as its competitors, some common ratios can be used such as current ratio, debt-to-total assets, inventory turnover, average collection period, net profit margin, and return on total assets (ROA). The first ratio to evaluate is the Current Ratio, which is calculated as current assets divided by current liabilities. Halliburton’s 2010 current ratio is 3.22, which improved from 2.99 in 2009 and from 2.66.in 2008. This ratio shows that Halliburton has a strong increasing liquidity and is in much better shape than its competitors. Baker Hughes has a 2010 current ratio of 2.77 and Schlumberger has a 2010 current ratio of 1.67. Therefore, Halliburton is in a better financial position to meet its short-term obligations. The second ratio to evaluate is Debt-To-Total Assets Ratio, which is calculated as total debt divided by total assets. Halliburton’s debt-to-total assets of .43 has improved from the 2009 ratio of .47 and the 2008 ratio of .46 given it a stronger position in the industry. Health Care Support Services free essay sample

Healthcare Support Services New to Health Care With today’s social, cultural, political and economic shifts, public health has become a huge topic of concern. More and more communities are depending on public health organizations for information, education and assistance in maintaining a healthy society. In The Untilled Fields of Public Health, Charles-Edward Amory Winslow defines public health as â€Å"the science and art of preventing diseases, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. Public health is a non exclusive entity. In public health, the â€Å"community† in which an issue is concerned with includes all people affected by a specific concern, illness, affliction, policy or law. Public health considers the community, not an individual, as the patient in which a proactive stance is taken, rather than a reactive one. Public health uses demog raphics and statistics to predict health issues and acts in accordance with those predictions to try and prevent illness or disease that a community might be at a high risk for. Public health accomplishes this by promoting awareness through providing education and information, as well as providing services that might be needed for the prevention of said illness or disease. The demographics of public health, as a whole, are non existent. Public health is an all inclusive organization. They do not exclude any one culture, race, income grade, region or country. Public health, as a whole, is concerned with the health of the population of the entire world. Every community, no matter how big or small, or how rich or poor, or where it’s located has its own public health concerns. That is the basis of public health as a whole. However, demographics can be applied to smaller groups or communities on a case by case basis. For instance, a few years ago when the Swine Flu was spreading across the world and there were concerns of a pandemic breakout, demographically it was contained to Mexico or people who had traveled in or out of Mexico or people who had had contact with those travelers. The Swine Flu originated in Mexico, therefore the demographic statistics show a higher percentage of Hispanics in Mexico afflicted than, for example, Asians in the United States. Public health offers many types of services. These services might include educational services, public awareness, printed information, handing out supplies and many other activities. Public health encompasses a broad scope of public services offered both by the government and private sectors of a community. Some types of services that are offered through organizations that belong to the public health scope might be nutrition education and assistance, such as Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC or the SNAP program through the Department of Health and Human Services, better known as the Food Stamp Program. Both of these services offer education and information on better nutrition of children and families, as well as financial assistance for purchasing healthier foods. Another organization that is encompassed by the public health definition would be vaccination clinics for children and elderly. These programs provide immunizations at low or no cost in order to prevent illness and disease. Without programs such as these, disease would be spread more rapidly and affect more and more of the population. Public health is fast becoming a new philanthropic trend as well. More and more individuals and businesses are contributing financially to the public health industry. The idea that educating and informing a community in order to make them more aware of health concerns is quickly being realized as a valid way of preventing and controlling the spread of illness and disease, therefore more people are donating time, money and effort toward public health. The idea that a community can self determine their health, lifestyle and even their own mortality rate through education, information, awareness and healthier lifestyle practices is a leading force in the promotion of public health. A well educated and proactive community can become healthier, more preventative of disease and therefore have a lower mortality rate. Educating communities on such issues as the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, obesity, drug abuse, cancers, HIV and AIDS and how they relate to the community statistically and demographically can make that community more aware of the concern and how it relates to them. This information can quite literally make the difference in an epidemic becoming a pandemic. Public health takes the concerns of a community and learns rom them, educates the public, works to prevent the reoccurrence of the issue at hand, and studies the statistics and information obtained to try to prevent it from happening again or in another community. This plays a vital role in the health care industry because it lessens the frequency of illness and disease, which in turn reduces the cost of health care overall. I chose public health because I feel public health services a nd programs will contribute to making the world healthier and reducing diseases world wide. Also, public health will provide new avenues for low income and minorities to become healthier through the programs offered by public health organizations. Some low income and minorities do not have equitable access to healthy foods, lifestyles or medical care, especially preventative health care that others have. I feel this is a huge contributor to disease and illness in those demographic areas and public health can remedy this problem through education and services offered. For me, working in the public health sector of the health care industry would be time and research intensive but would be extremely rewarding personally and publicly. Working to make communities more aware, preventing illness and disease, assisting in legislature, community advocacy and doing it all within the scope of public health would be a most fulfilling and desirable position for me in the health care industry. In a nutshell, public health is an all encompassing, all inclusive sector of the health care industry that holds a blind eye to race, economic status, culture and region but that has its eyes wide open in realizing education and preventative health care can, and will, make the difference. There are more information required that’s assist in the aircraft maintenance from the recently posted by the European Aviation Safety Authority. The Transport Canada has also availed information relating to human factors to world users to promote safety across the globe. This information can be utilized by the three countries in improving their technology of their aircrafts. This helps in attaining the rel evant information that is missing in the respective countries in order to fast track the aircraft maintenance. Poland Poland has an ancient aircraft industry seen as from the 20th century. It has not been easy for the industry to develop but through challenges and learning from it. They are the leading as well in the maintenance of these aircrafts. The technology they use i s superior and commands a large percentage share of the market globally. They produce various parts and accessories of the aircraft. Most of the country’s productions are exported to various countries such as USA, Venezuela, Greece and Italy. Others include Canada, Spain, and Germany among others. With technology, come benefits (Wooldridge 73). The employment is high in the country due to outstanding performance in the industry. The recent changes witnessed in the country are due to the accession to the European Union. This has led to tremendous changes being made in the civil aviation industry in Poland. As a result, there has been tremendous increase in the number of passengers using their space. They have all the equipments necessary to be utilized in the sector as far as the maintenance is concern and the care giving to the users (Woodward and Andrew 64). The Poland aviation industry is highly developed and thus many airlines outsource their repairs and maintenance servic es. The main reason for the outsourcing is the technology used which is high, service provision is excellent and the costs are readily affordable. The country should also collaborate with Venezuela, Turkey, USA, Germany and European Union (Walsh and Mark 37). Venezuela The country began the use of the aircraft as early as 1920 when the military established a base with the help of France. France provided them with all the equipments and the technicians necessary for the establishments to be complete. The technology they attained was extremely practical and weighty that they came up with the G-3 with one engine and the G-4 with the twin engines. It is through this technology that it has made Venezuela a nation with its self defense mechanism when it comes to war. It has various aircrafts which are used specifically in war and training. They light and fast hence can strike without being easily noticed. This is because of the technology used in the manufacture and maintenance. All the training session by the students are done using the fast rate aircrafts. This helps in exposing them to a highly completive and techno-vast industry . The standards set are high hence beneficial in equipping them with the relevant knowledge, therefore fast racking their creativity (Szezepanik 62). Venezuela aircraft maintenance is outsourcing various services including the materials from Germany, France and Italy (Nath 2009). Arnolfinis Marriage Essay

Arnolfinis Marriage Essay Jan van Eyck was one of the greatest and most influential Flemish painters of altarpieces and portraits of the 1400s Hayes. van Eycks paintings often include objects with hidden symbolic meaning. There are several different interpretations of the symbolic meaning concerning his portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his second bride often referred to as The Arnolfini Marriage. Marriage is a sacred union between man and woman. A wedding is one of the most important events in a womans life. Often a wedding occurs in the present of the wedding party, family members and friends. During the 1400s a wedding ceremony was performed in the privacy of the home. van Eyck was hired to paint a portrait of this marriage union. Some art historians, like Panofsky, claim that van Eyck was a witness to the Arnolfini wedding and the painting serves as documentation of their vows Kren. Jeanne de Chenany looks pregnant in her green wedding dress, this wedding was kept private because it was a secret or maybe this type of dress was very stylish during the 1400s. The bride was definitely not a virgin, because white symbolizes pureness not green. Arnolfini is holding Jeanne de Chenany hand as an expression of his love for her. This wedding was held during the daytime because you can clearly see the light through the window in the painting. The single burning candle in the chandelier was not needed to light up the room. This candle symbolizes the union candle or could even symbolize the presence of God. In the Renaissance culture, a devotional candle signified Gods all-seeing knowledge Pioch. Arnolfini and his bride are not wearing any shoes. This symbolizes the floor is considered holy ground or the sanctity of marriage Pioch. Some art historians claim the shoes do not have a symbolic meaning. Dog were considered a symbol of devotion and love so often they were included in portraits of a married couple. van Eyck painted the mirror as a reflection of the witnesses present for the wedding. Which includes van Eycks own tiny self-portrait Pioch. His signature on the painting reads Jan van Eyck was present, this has been interpreted by some historians as an indication that he served as a witness Pioch. If the Arnolfinis Marriage had taken place during the 1900s it would have been very easy for an artist to include every single detail of the wedding. Because the wedding took place during the 1400s, all we can do is assume or use our best judgment to interpret the true meaning of each symbol in the portrait. We can all at least agree van Eyck was the artist that painted this portrait. Then again some historians say his brother Hubert was the artist. Kren

Josef Ks Victory in Death Over the Law in Kafkas The Trial Essay

Josef Ks' Victory in Death Over the Law in Kafka's The Trial Kafka's The Trial In The Trial by Franz Kafka, the Law, its courts, and its people seem to makeup a kind of poorly run, secret society. It appears that the purpose of this secret society is to uphold the Law although using very different methods of enforcement than what most people are used to. The arrest of Josef K. and the manner in which his trial is conducted attests to the unusual workings of this Law. The mysterious execution of Josef K. without any knowledge of a ruling only adds to the complexity of how the law works. Though what K. never does understand is that the accusations against him and the question of his guilt are almost irrelevant to his execution. In reality, K.'s survival depended completely on the Law's success in recruiting K. Which had the law been successful, might have proved to be worse than execution. The final scene though, marks the defeat of the Law even though this victory is in death. It must first be said that the purpose of K.?s recruitment is impossible to be known for sure and of no significance either. K. held a high position in the business world and was respected in these aspects by men of his stature and by those above him. It is possible that because K. was young, intelligent, and successful, he appealed to a certain position the Law needed to fill. Or it could also have been that the Law wished K. to serve a necessary function for the court. The court may have needed K. to be like the defendants he saw in the court?s offices who could all unknowingly assisted the court in its operations. After all, K. is told by Titorelli the painter that a full acquittal has never been heard of and that a more likely result... ...ute him. In this sense, the Law was defeated. Their only objective from the onset of the trial was to exploit K.?s instincts for survival. They had intended for K. to become so concerned with his trial that it would completely overtake his previous lifestyle. He would then soon fall from his place in society into the unbreakable grip of the Law. It first seemed as though K. would easily succumb to the pressures and be a helpless victim of the Law for the rest of his life. But with a rapid reversal in his actions, K. refused to become the victim and intended to live his life completely separated from the Law and his trial. He exercised his freedom over the efforts of the Law to control his life. His determination to live like he had always lived was therefore the direct cause of his death. BIBLIOGRAPHY Kafka, Franz. The Trial. New York: Schocken Books, 1998.

Mineral and Water Function

There are over 20 minerals you need to maintain a healthy diet. Some you may only need in small quantities, but major minerals require higher amounts such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sulfur (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006, Chapter 9). Minerals have many functions and are essential to the body structure and the regulatory process that maintain life. We consume minerals from animals and plants. The iron content of meat is predictable because the iron is part of a protein in muscle that gives the meat its red color. In other foods, minerals are present as contaminants; where a food is grown and how it is processed can affect its mineral content. † (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006, Chapter 9). Major sources of minerals are milk, eggs, meats, peas, fruits, cereals, whole grains, fish, and poultry. Water has numerous functions it performs in the body some of which include: moistening tissues, lubricating joints, regulating body temperature, protecting organs and tissues, helping prevent constipation, helping dissolve minerals and other nutrients to make them accessible to the human body, lessening the burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products, and carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells (â€Å"Mayo Clinic†, 2013). The depletion of water, dehydration, will have more rapid symptoms than any other nutrient deficiency in your body (Grosvenor & Smolin, Chapter 9, 2006). Body weight is about 60% water for the average adult. Water bathes the cells of the body and lubricates and cleanses internal and external body surfaces. â€Å"Watery tears lubricate the eyes and wash away dirt, synovial fluid lubricates the joints, and saliva lubricates the mouth, making it easier to chew and swallow food. Water resists compression so it cushions body compartments such as the joints and eyeballs against shock. The cushioning effect of water in the amniotic sac protects the fetus as it grows inside a pregnant woman. (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006, Chapter 9). Water is an excellent solvent; glucose, amino acids, minerals, and many other substances needed by body cells dissolve in water. The chemical reactions of metabolism that support life take place in water. (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006, Chapter 9). The general effects of dehydration are fatigue, muscle weakness, poor concentration, headaches, dizziness or lightheadedness, and decreased metabolism (â€Å"Functional Fitne ss Facts†, 2013). Mild to moderate dehydration can be treated easily and generally doesn’t cause permanent damage with preventable intake of water consumption. The consumption of water and minerals has great effects on everyday body functions. I have learn how cereal can be extremely beneficial for receiving nutrients we don’t normally get, especially me with my diet. If I implement cereal I will receive a lot of important nutrients. Secondly the many functions of water are important to our everyday expenditures. Sneezing, coughing, crying and cannot be done without water.
